Tilt Bar Replacement / Tilt Bar Connector Replacement

For Hollow Core Shutters. PART # (1A) 3 1/2" Louver - Tilt Bar Connector(2A) 2 1/2" Louver - Tilt Bar Connector, 3 1/2" Louver - Tilt Bar Connector - Single and 2 1/2" Louver - Tilt Bar Connector -Single.I

In order to make the prongs that go into the louver face more flexible it is highly recommended that you warm them before installation. Immersed in a cup of warm/hot tap water or using a hair dryer are easy ways to do this.

Watch our YouTube video: Shutter Tilt Bar Replacement

Step 1 -   Remove tilt bar from shutter panel by removing the End Caps located at the top and bottom of the tilt bar.

Step 2- Once the End Caps are removed you should be able to slide the tilt bar off of the Connectors

Step 3 – Remove any broken Connectors. Firmly grip the Connector while holding the louver in place and Pull the connector until it releases from the louver. You actually will be breaking the connector tabs to get it out of the louver. NOTE: If you are replacing the top and bottom Connectors, Save the ones you remove as you will need to cut the replacement connectors to the same length.

Step 4 – Attach the new connectors by inserting (into the louver slot) the "Longer" round tab first and then the Shorter tab second. The tab will bend as you push it into the louver. If you are replacing the very top or very bottom connector cut the new connectors to the same length as the old ones.

Step 5 – Slide the tilt bar onto the connectors and insert the End Caps to secure the tilt bar in place.

Helpful Note: Yes, the second prong will bend back until it is fully inserted. Push till it goes in, the prong will "re-open" once fully inserted. Once the short tab is inserted I use my finger to start "pre" bending the 2nd tab back so it goes in easier.

Staple Replacement- Louver or Tilt bar

Tools needed: Needle Nose Pliers, C- Pliers, hammer, cloth rag.

Parts: Staple and Glue

Tilt Bar

  1. Thread new staple through staple in Louver. Using needle nose pliers grip one leg of the staple being installed.
  2. Test fit the staple to the existing holes in the tilt bar. Does the staple line up with the existing holes in the tilt bar? If not, bend the staple legs to line up with the holes in the tilt bar.
  3. While holding the staple with the needle nose pliers, apply “super glue” to the legs of the staple and then insert as much of the staple into the tilt bar as possible.
  4. With the staple “tacked” in place. Use c- pliers to finish inserting staple. Open c-pliers enough to place one “jaw” of the pliers on the staple and the opposing “jaw” on the face of the tilt bar.

(Place a piece of cloth between the tilt bar face and the pliers to prevent damage to the tilt bar.)

  1. From this point you should be able to use the pliers to drive the staple in to the desired depth.

Louver – Having someone help is recommended.

  1. Remove Shutter from Frame and lay on flat surface with louvers in the open position. This will provide support to the back of the Louver as you drive the staple in from the front.
  2. Thread staple through staple in Tilt bar. Using needle nose pliers grip one leg of the staple being installed.
  3. Test fit the staple to the existing holes in the Louver. Does the staple line up with the existing holes in the Louver? If not, bend the staple legs to line up with the holes in the Louver.
  4. While holding the staple with the needle nose pliers, apply “super glue” to the legs of the staple and then insert as much of the staple into the Louver as possible.
  5. With the staple “tacked” in place, use a hammer to finish inserting the staple to the desired depth. You may need to hold the tilt bar to one side and drive in one side of the staple partially then switch sides, driving the staple in a little at a time.

Note: Replacing both Tilt Bar and Louver Staple? We recommend installing the Louver Staple FIRST and then the Tilt Bar Staple SECOND.

Wood Louver Repair / Louver Pin Replacement-

** If there is a tilt bar attached to the face of the louver, remove the staple from the tilt bar, leave the staple in the louver. If you have the “clear view option” where the louvers are attached together by a hidden tilt bar, remove the screw or nail holding the hidden tilt to the louver.

  1. Remove louver from frame by taking a box cutter or exacto knife and placing the blade between the louver and frame, resting the blade on the plastic louver pin. Take a small hammer and tap the back of the blade forcing it to cut through the plastic louver pin. When one side is free you should be able to remove the louver without cutting the opposite side louver pin.
  2. Remove the damaged pin from inside the louver and shutter frame.
  3. Test fit the Louver Repair Pin to make sure it will fit flush inside the shutter frame. If it does not fit, the hole in the frame will need to be drilled to accommodate the Louver Repair Pin.
  4. Using a ¼” diameter drill bit, drill the hole to the required diameter and/or depth.
  5. Install the Louver Repair Pin into the shutter frame, ensuring the “collar” on the pin is all the way against the frame.
  6. Install a regular louver pin on one side of the louver
  7. Place regular louver pin side first into the frame. As you put in the second side ( with the spring loaded pin) push the pin in, which should allow you to move the louver into place.
  8. Reattach the tilt bar staple.

Notes: The staple in the tilt bar is usually shorter than the staple in the louver and is easier to remove and replace.

** If you are re-using the existing louver you may be able to skip line 1 of the instructions.

TENSION PIN-Used to Increase the “ Tension” to hold louvers in position. Install a tension pin in every other louver.

Tilt Bar Pin Replacement- Part - TBP01 and TBP02

Tools Needed: Flat Blade Screwdriver, Pliers   - Helper Recommended.

Step 1 – Remove shutter from opening by removing hinge pins

Step 2- Using a flat blade screwdriver, pry the old Tilt Bar Pin(s) out of the back of the Tilt Bar.

Step3- Once the Tilt Bar Pin is out of the Tilt Bar and hanging from the Louver, rotate the Tilt bar Pin(s) to the left or right until the short prong comes out.

Tip: look at the new part, see that the prongs at the end are two different lengths. You want to get the short prong to come out first.

Step 4 – Insert the new Tilt Bar Pin(s) into the louver face. Insert the longer prong first and the short prong second. You may have to use pliers to get the Tilt Bar Pin prong to “snap” into the louver face.

Step 5- Helper Recommended, Make sure to Support the back of the louver during this step. Open the louvers and place the back of the louvers on a flat surface. I find a wall works best. With the louvers open and against a flat surface for support, place the Tilt Bar Pin into the rear of the Tilt Bar and push on the front of the Tilt Bar until the Tilt Bar Pin snaps into place.

Helpful Hints: To get the new Tilt Bar Pin to snap into the back of the tilt bar you will have to push hard on the face of the tilt bar while a helper makes sure the louvers stay in the open position.
